Jorge Vides showed what it really means to think of ourselves as part of nature and not as an alternative to it. In 1958, the Guatemalan doctor bought a small plot of land surrounded by primeval forest to grow coffee, but he did not follow the 'well-proven' method. Instead of deforestation, he just moved the coffee into the trees and integrated cultivation into the ecosystem. A separate little world has developed here, where Jorge even founded a school where the children of the finca workers can attend. The farm exploded into the public consciousness of coffee in 2002, when Jorge's granddaughter, Maria, unsuspectingly entered their coffee in the Cup of Excellence competition, where - to their own surprise - they achieved the prestigious second place.
